Luxembourg: The state will subsidize islam

During the convention signature.
On January 26, 2015, a convention was signed in Luxembourg by the government and the major religions. According to an article published on Radio Vatican’s website on January 31, the State no longer wishes to finance the Catholic cult or offer religion classes. As Radio Vatican pointed out, “concretely, the budget granted to the Catholic Church is going to drop from 23 million to 6.75 million a year. An important loss of income,” that does not, however, apply to all religions, since one of the other novelties of this convention is the recognition of a subsidized cult for Islam.
The convention was signed by the authorities of the Grand Duchy and the counsel of subsidized cults that represents the “main religions”.
According to Radio Vatican, what worries the religious communities the most is the elimination of religion classes. Under the pressure of the new government, they are to be replaced by “values education classes”.
In December 2014, the Bishops’ Conference of Luxembourg had published a memorandum in favor of religion classes in public schools. The text was signed by leaders of the Jewish, Anglican, Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant, Reformed, Neo-apostolic and Muslim religions of the Grand Duchy.
