In a statement published on April 24, 2018, the Episcopal Conference of Nicaragua declared that it has accepted a role as “mediator and witness” in the dialogue convened by the Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega Saavedra on Sunday, April 22.

The dialogue will discuss “the very serious situations the Nicaraguan nation has experienced and intensified in the past week”, especially after the protests that were violently repressed, causing 10 deaths officially.

So far, local non-governmental organizations have counted at least 30 dead and 428 wounded throughout the country, that has been plunged into an unprecedented crisis by the decision to reform the retirement system.

The auxiliary bishop of Managua, Bishop Silvio Báez, organized a peaceful protest on Saturday, April 28, so that the Nicaraguans could “show their faith and love for Nicaragua.” A huge crowd gathered before the cathedral of Managua, that served as a refuge for the protesters on the first day of the protests, Wednesday, April 18.
