Mexico Is Being Hit by a “Tsunami of Violence and Murder,” Warns Cardinal
Cardinal Carlos Aguiar Retes
During his first meeting with the priests of his diocese, Cardinal Carlos Aguiar Retes, the new archbishop of Mexico City, called for concrete action from the clergy in the fight against the “tsunamis of violence and murder” that are affecting Mexican society head-on.
“In the face of society’s problems, we cannot hide in our sacristies,” exclaimed the new archbishop of Mexico – nominated on December 7, 2017 – during the priestly retreat to prepare for Lent of 2018.
For the prelate, there is an urgent need to “preserve Christian values”, particularly among the youth who are the most vulnerable. In order to put an end to the spiral of violence, the cardinal encouraged the clergy to create a “profound collaboration among all the institutions: schools, youth groups”.
Spiritual formation is also a priority: “84% of Mexicans say they are Catholic,” declared Cardinal Aguiar, “but those who go to church must set their hearts on forming true communities of Christ’s disciples so that their spiritual life may take root.”
On February 5, 2018, two priests were assassinated in the state of Guerrero. In 2017, Mexico was ranked as the second deadliest country in the world, right after war-torn Syria.
The Solution: Restore Christ as King of the Nations
For the protection of the youth, nothing can replace a truly Catholic education and a profound spirit of faith nourished by a liturgy worthy of the name. This is the goal of the Society of St. Pius X through its Mass centers, schools, and movements such as the Asociación Nacional de la Juventud Mariana, the Sociedad San Andrés, and the Cruzada Cordimariana. Catholic society can only be rebuilt upon the natural and divine foundations of Christianity, under the beneficial guidance of the Church.
The Catholic hierarchy has no other solution than to preach the doctrine of Christ King of the Nations if it wishes to save a society that is heading for its ruin. The present situation in Mexico is but an illustration of the seeds of anarchy sown so long ago in the name of universal democracy. Pius X denounced as early as 1910 the
...the great movement of apostasy being organized in every country for the establishment of a One-World Church which shall have neither dogmas, nor hierarchy, neither discipline for the mind, nor curb for the passions, and which, under the pretext of freedom and human dignity, would bring back to the world (if such a Church could overcome) the reign of legalized cunning and force, and the oppression of the weak, and of all those who toil and suffer.
The violence of modern societies is simply the consequence of the rejection of religion and God.
In the face of the modern ideologies of socialism and liberalism, in his letter Our Apostolic Mandate to the bishops of France, Pope St. Pius X saw the ardent need to:
...repeat with the utmost energy in these times of social and intellectual anarchy when everyone takes it upon himself to teach as a teacher and lawmaker – the City cannot be built otherwise than as God has built it; society cannot be setup unless the Church lays the foundations and supervises the work; no, civilization is not something yet to be found, nor is the New City to be built on hazy notions; it has been in existence and still is: it is Christian civilization, it is the Catholic City. It has only to be set up and restored continually against the unremitting attacks of insane dreamers, rebels and miscreants. Omnia instaurare in Christo
