Month of the Sacred Heart: Heart of Jesus, Source of All Consolation

Sitting on the edge of the well dug so long ago by Jacob, in the land of Sichar, Jesus was waiting for His Apostles who had gone to find food in the city. He was tired, the Gospel tells us. (see Jn. 4)

And behold a woman of Samaria arrived with a pitcher on her shoulder to fetch some water: “Give me to drink,” Jesus said to her, provoking her charity in order to give her the gift of Faith in return.

But she was surprised that a stranger would ask her for a drink, and Jesus answered her: “If you knew the gift of God and if you knew who it is who is speaking to you, you would have asked Him for a drink and He would have given you a living water… the water of eternal life.”

A few moments later this woman, supernaturally enlightened, ran to the city to call out all its inhabitants: “Come, come,” she said… She led them to Jesus who evangelized them, and they believed in Him and called Him the Savior of the world.

“Si scires donum Dei!” These words spoken to the faithless foreigner betray the overflowing zeal of the Heart of Jesus… How He loves souls, with what patience He awaits them, with what gentleness He provokes in them reflection, trust, and efforts!...
