October, the Month of the Guardian Angels

Source: FSSPX News

The writings of St. Thomas Aquinas offer accurate and clear teachings on the holy angels who are our guardians.

In this month of October dedicated to the holy guardian angels, FSSPX.News proposes to its readers the treatise of the angels developed in the Catechism of the Summa Theologica by Fr. Thomas Pègues, OP.

Published in 1918, this work explains the teachings of the Angelic Doctor on a level that anyone can grasp.

The Angels and their nature

Why did God wish there to be pure spirits in the work created by Him?

God wished there to be pure spirits in the work created by Him because they were to be the crowning of this work (q. 50, a. 1).

What does it mean when you say that the pure spirits were to be the crowning of the work created by God?

I mean that they are the highest, most perfect and most beautiful part (Ibid.).

Could you tell me what pure spirits are?

Yes, pure spirits are natures or substances that exist free of any body or any matter. (q. 50, q. 1-2)

Are there very many of these pure spirits?

Yes, there are a very great number of these pure spirits (q. 50, a. 3).

Are there more of them than of all the other created natures?

Yes, there are more of them than of all the other created natures (Ibid.).

Why did there need to be so many?

Because it was fitting that the most beautiful should be the greatest part of the work of God (Ibid.)
