“Pakistan is now in the hands of the Talibans.  They are growing ever stronger, even after the death of Bin Laden.  And they can count on the support of large stratums of the population.” Such is the cry of alarm sent to the missionary agency Fides by Fr. Bonnie Mendes, a priest in Pakistan, and a leader from the Asia section of Caritas Internationalis.

“The average citizen, the average Pakistani Muslim, is enraged against the government, the United States and NATO.  Which makes him favorable to the actions of the Taliban groups,” underlines Fr. Mendes, the day after the attack in Karachi against one of the government's military bases, which caused 11 deaths.  This was the third attack in a month against Pakistani military objectives.  For him, “this shows that the Taliban groups, after Bin Laden's death, were not discouraged, far from it: they wanted to give a proof of their strength.”  And he adds: “extremism is gaining a foothold, and there are no strengths to counter it.”  The religious minorities, including the Christians, are reduced to silence and even annihilated, while several observers begin again to wield the specter of another military coup d'état to bring order back.” (sources: apic/fides – DICI#236, June 11, 2011)
