The monthly magazine Machina, after an absence of three years, has reappeared with its first issue of 2006. On the cover-page, there is the  icon of the black Virgin of Czestochowa with the face of the singer Madonna and the child Jesus with the face of her child. “We are scandalized to see once again, the miraculous image of the Mother of God desecrated for publicity and commercial purposes, said the Paulinian Fathers of the monastery of Jasna Gora, the guardians of the icon.

The Catholic daily, Nasz Dzienmik spoke likewise and condemned this “latest act of profanation of sacred symbols”. The director of Machina, Piotr Metz said he was “surprised” at these reactions. Joseph Kloch, spokesman for the Polish Bishops’ conference said that the photographic montage constituted  a lack of respect for religious signs, symbols and values.

On February 13, Polish television announced that Michael Lisiecki, the magazine’s editor, had written a letter to the Paulinian Fathers of Jasna Gora, in which he said he did not mean to offend religious feelings and wished to respect the icon of the Blessed Virgin venerated by the Polish people.
