Poland: Europe's Largest Statue of the Virgin Mary

Virtual Project for the Statue of the Virgin Mary
Polish billionaire Roman Karkosik, 73, and his wife Grazyna have undertaken to provide their small town of Kikol, 170 kilometers northwest of Warsaw, with an imposing statue of the Virgin Mary. The municipality has been informed of the project since 2023, and local authorities have given their permission, reports the German Catholic news agency KNA.
Construction of the edifice is expected to be completed by mid-2026. The structure will be 55.6 meters (182 ft.) high and will include a 40-meter (131 ft.) statue of the Virgin Mary, which will sit on a 15-meter (49 ft.)-high crown-shaped pedestal. This pedestal will also serve as an observation deck for visitors.
The statue of the Virgin Mary is expected to be the largest in Europe, surpassing the one in Miribel, in western France. The French statue was erected over 80 years ago and stands 35 meters (115 ft.) tall. However, the world's largest statue of the Virgin Mary stands in the Philippines, measuring over 90 meters (295 ft.).
The Polish monument is located near the Konotopia Sanctuary, which houses the miraculous statue of Our Lady of Sorrows, a pilgrimage site throughout the Dobrinland region.
15 years ago, the installation of a giant statue of Christ had already caused a stir in Poland. This statue, erected in Swiebodzin, in the west of the country, measures 52 meters (171 ft.) including its base, making it smaller than the current project. The Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is 38 meters (125 ft.) tall. The 61-meter-(200 ft.) tall sculpture in Indonesia, unveiled in 2024, is considered the largest statue of Jesus in the world.
