Polish Bishops Intend to Influence the Vote on Proposed Anti-Abortion Bills

The Polish Bishops’ Conference intends to influence the debate on medical interruption of pregnancy, at a time when Parliament is about to examine two bills on life.
A statement from the Presidium of the Bishops’ Conference was published on January 10, 2018, “with the ‘Stop Abortion’ bill about to be examined by Parliament”.
This bill has collected 830,000 signatures among the people. It prescribes “the abrogation of abortion for the eugenic motives of sickness or birth defects”, explains the Presidium, adding that “the Bishops’ Conference has supported this project from the start”.
This initiative is less severe than the one rejected by Parliament in 2016, that provided prison sentences for patients and medical staff participating in an abortion.
A second bill opposed to the first, entitled “Save Women”, supports broader access to abortion, but there is little chance it will pass.
“A nation that kills its children renounces any future,” warns the Polish episcopate, calling on the members of Parliament to “respect the right to life and adopt the ‘Stop Abortion’ bill”.
