On Friday December 14, the Vatican announced the publication of a “Doctrinal note on certain aspects of evangelization” , drawn up by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, in collaboration with the various dicasteries concerned. The text will be available in French, Italian, German, English, Spanish and Portuguese.

The document was presented by the Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith , cardinal William Joseph Levada, by the Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, cardinal Ivan Dias, by the Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, cardinal Francis Arinze, and by the Secretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Mgr. Angelo Amato.

Some Roman observers believe that this document could clarify certain points concerning the implementation of “inculturation”, and also the difference between “evangelization” and “proselytism”.

In February 2006, the plenary session of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith had worked on the theme of evangelization. In front of Benedict XVI who was giving an audience to the members and consultants of the Congregation, Cardinal Levada said that this working meeting  had examined, among other things, “aspects of evangelization in current circumstances, because we are witnessing today, in the media and among the faithful, a certain confusion about the meaning of the term ‘evangelization’, also because of a general relativism and  religious syncretism”.
