The Question of Abortion in Ireland Will Be Decided with a Referendum

The Irish will vote in a referendum at the end of May to decide whether they want to liberalize abortion or maintain the current legislation, announced Prime Minister Leo Varadkar last Monday.

The Irish Prime Minister also confirmed in a press conference, reports the New York Times, that the ministry of Health is already preparing a bill authorizing unrestricted access to abortion up until 12 weeks, and even later for pregnancies resulting from violence or fetuses with serious illnesses.

According to the Ipsos/MRBI survey on January 25, 2018, for the newspaper The Irish Times, 56% of the participants are in favor of modifying the abortion amendment to the Constitution to create broader access, and 29% are opposed.

The referendum, in which Leo Varadkar will campaign for “a personal ‘yes’”, as Agnès Rotivel reports in La Croix, will take place two months before Pope Francis’ visit to the country. He plans to participate in the World Meeting of Families in Dublin in July of 2018. Inadmissible!
