A Recent Archeological Discovery Confirms the Historical Accuracy of the Bible
On January 1, 2018, some Israeli archeologists revealed the results of their research on a clay seal discovered at the foot of the Wailing Wall.
It is a circular seal made of baked clay, about ½ an inch in diameter; one side depicts two people dressed in striped gowns, standing face to face and holding their hand out towards a crescent moon, probably a reference to foreign pagan cults.
The image is accompanied by an inscription in ancient Hebrew characters mentioning the title of “governor of the city”. This discovery confirms that 2,700 years ago, the office of “governor of the city” existed, a fact that hitherto had been backed only by biblical scriptural sources.
In the books of Esdras (5:14), Nehemia (8:9), and Jeremias (40:11) different terms are used for the office of governor, terms that date back to the time of the Babylonian captivity.
Although there is nothing revolutionary about this news, it is encouraging. As the archeologist Estelle Villeneuve explained in La Croix, this discovery “confirms something we already knew through history. We have known for years that there are many historical events in the Bible.”
