Recognition of the Martyrdom of 95 Victims of the Spanish War

On June 4, 2013,Pope Francis authorized the Congregation for the Causes of the Saints to promulgate decrees recognizing the martyrdom of 95 future blessed, all killed “out of hatred for the faith” during the Spanish War (1936-1939).

Among these future blessed are many religious, including 18 Benedictines and 68 Marist brothers. The Pope also authorized the recognition of the heroic virtue of 4 servants of God, founders of religious congregations or associations: the Italian Sister Giulia Crostarosa (1696-1755), the Italian priest Nicola Mazza (1790-1865), the Spanish Sister Teresa Toda y Juncosa (1826-1898), and the Portuguese bishop Joao de Oliveira Matos Ferreira (1879-1962).
