Report from a Successful March for Life in the UK

The March for Life took place in London for the first time on Saturday, May 5, 2018. It ended at the foot of the Nelson Column in Trafalgar Square.

Clare McCullough, member of the Good Counsel Network – an association that assists pregnant women who wish to keep their child – addressed the crowd and denounced the decision by Ealing Council to set up a so-called “buffer zone” around an abortion clinic, in order to keep protesters away.

Bishop John Keenan of Paisley and Bishop John Wilson, auxiliary bishop of Westminster, encouraged the participants not to be afraid to defend their positions publicly. Bishop Keenan declared: “You have no idea of the galvanizing effect your courage will have if you stand up before the British media courageously, even under attack, and be pro-life.” “We will win this battle by truth, but we will win it even more by courage,” he added.

In the United Kingdom, the March for Life is still young. The first edition was held in 2012, thanks to the initiative of a small group of pro-life militants from Birmingham. The annual event has met with such success that the organizers decided to come to London this year for the first time.

The Charlie Gard and Alfie Evans affairs, named after two babies who suffered from rare diseases and whose parents were unable to keep the medical team from stopping all treatment, encouraged many to join the March.
