Romania. Appeals for collaboration by the Pope. Frictions at ground level

During the ad limina visit of the Romanian Catholic Bishops on 1st March 2003, Pope John Paul II asked the Catholics of the Latin and Eastern rites to work together with the Orthodox Churches in the context of the construction of Europe.

However, the atmosphere is not one of collaboration. The matter of the expropriation of churches remains unresolved, and the humiliations inflicted on the Catholics by the Orthodox are still part of daily life. It is clear that in such conditions it is unthinkable to even contemplate a union on a political level.

In the Documents section, we quote extracts from an interview given by a Romanian bishop to the press agency APIC, in which he tells of a cruel reality for Catholics.
