On February 21, 2020, thousands of Israeli settlers gathered on land belonging to the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem in Tayasir, near Tubas, in the northern West Bank, in gross violation of private property. Settlers arrived in dozens of buses and cars and gathered for a demonstration on the grounds of the Latin Patriarchate, without any authorization.

In a statement released on February 22, the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem expressed concern over the escalation of these types of incidents and denounced the fact that the Israeli authorities allow such acts to be carried out without reacting.

A few days earlier, the settlers had taken their cattle to the same land, causing “considerable damage” there.

According to the Vatican news agency Fides, which also reported on the incident, these acts of intimidation must be read in the light of the American peace plan for the Middle East.

It provides in particular for the annexation of the Jordan Valley and the West Bank settlements by the Hebrew state and “nullifies the possibility of a Palestinian state,” deplores Fides.
