Why is the Society of St. Pius X holding a General Chapter?
Holding a Chapter is a universal practice in all the congregations, orders and religious institutions of the Catholic Church.
The Statutes of the Society, approved by the Church on November 1, 1970, and written by our founder, Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre (1905-1991), stipulate that a General Chapter is to be held every twelve years.
The text reads: “The General Chapter meets every twelve years to elect the Superior General and his two Assistants. Its goal is also to ensure that the Society is applying the statutes and keeping their spirit. There shall be no updates or innovations, except perhaps to the administration chapter, due to the development of the Society.” Statutes V, 2.
The Society’s fourth General Chapter will take place from Wednesday, July 11, to Saturday, July 21, 2018, at the international Seminary of St. Pius X in Econe (Switzerland). It will be preceded by a spiritual retreat preached by Fr. Emeric Baudot, first Assistant of the District of France, and prior in Paris.
