The Termination of Vincent Lambert’s Treatment Has Been Approved

After the University Hospital of Reims, where Vincent Lambert has been hospitalized since 2008 announced its intention to terminate his treatment for the fourth time, the patient’s parents filed an emergency appeal with the Administrative Tribunal of Châlons-en-Champagne, that was rejected on January 31, 2019.
In their report submitted in November 2018, the three experts commissioned by the court concluded that the young man had “irreversible brain damage”, but that his treatment was “not a case of unreasonable therapeutic obstinacy”, which is the central theme of the Claeys-Leonetti law on terminal illness.
Based on this conclusion, the lawyers of Vincent Lambert’s parents requested a complementary evaluation on January 21, 2019.
But the magistrates decided otherwise: the decision handed down on January 31, 2019, stipulates that the hospital’s decision “does not go against the prescriptions” of the law and that “Vincent Lambert’s desire not to be kept alive if he were to find himself in the condition in which he has been for the past 10 years has been established.”
It is now up to the Council of State to examine the appeal filed by the parents’ lawyers that will buy a little more time for the young man.
