Tridentine Mass at St. Mary Major’s. False rumors concerning the Society of St. Pius X
Cardinal Hoyos will celebrate a traditional Solemn Mass in the Basilica of St. Mary Major on Saturday May 24. Some newspapers and press agencies have said that on this occasion, three of the bishops of the Society of St. Pius X would be reconciled with Rome, adding details of an internal split because of conflicting opinions.
We hail the fact that a cardinal, prefect of a Roman congregation, will celebrate the Tridentine Mass publicly, in an important basilica. It is the first time in 30 years, and we hope that other cardinals and bishops follow his example.
As for the information concerning the Society of St. Pius X, it is of course completely false, and totally groundless.
At the time of the discussions which punctuated the year 2001, the Society asked Rome, after the many harassments and persecutions suffered by Tradition, to make gestures (as she was duty bound to do), which would restore confidence by lifting the canonical sanctions and publicly affirming the right of every priest of the Catholic Church to the Tridentine Mass, without restrictive conditions. The priestly Society of St. Pius X is still waiting for this gesture from Rome in favor of priests who wish to remain faithful to the centuries-old rite, and to the Catholic faith, taught and specified in an objective manner by the Church’s Magisterium, up until the Second Vatican Council.
As we await this happy day, we continue to pray that the Mass which formed the saints of the Church, be re-established.
