United Kingdom: A macabre discovery

Adenbrooke Hospital in Cambridge.

The remains of over 15,000 babies who were aborted or miscarried were incinerated by hospitals in the United Kingdom. Some were even used to heat buildings. This information came to light following an investigation by British TV station Channel 4. According to English daily The Telegraph on March 24, 2014, reporters were able to establish that 27 medical institutions had incinerated the remains of approximately 15,500 fetuses over the last two years. For example, Adenbrooke Hospital in Cambridge and Ipswich Hospital, northeast of London, incinerated 1,898 corpses between 2011 and 2013 as part of a program to “economise energy” by using “biological waste” to heat buildings.

The investigation also revealed that parents who had lost a child because of a miscarriage were treated with a flagrant lack of compassion by medical staff, and were not consulted as to their wishes with regard to the child’s remains.

According to The Telegraph, the Health Minister Dan Poulter placed an immediate ban on this practice which he said was “totally unacceptable.”
