Translated into 30 languages and published in 100 countries, the new book by the pop singer Madonna, The English Roses, is a story for children inspired by the Kabala. “I don’t write to become richer,” she explains, “but to share with children as well as with adults the lessons of wisdom that I have discovered.”

Madonna was introduced to this esoteric Judaism, based on numerological reading of the Hebrew Bible, as were David Gilmour, guitarist with Pink Floyd, Mick Jagger, Elizabeth Taylor and Naomi Campbell.

It is a New Age version of the Kabala, offering to its followers “protection against negative forces”, “development of positive thinking” and “awareness of the power to rejuvenate every seven years”. Cosmetic products, and also a mineral water which promises “centuries of wisdom in each drop”, have been marketed. There are currently around fifty centers of this New Age Kabala throughout the world. Madonna has contributed to the finance of the one which opened in London this year, at a cost of more than £3 million sterling.
