The archbishop of Boston, Msgr. Sean P. O’Malley, foresees the closing of dozens of parishes in his diocese. The first closings will begin this June, he announced to his priests. He asked them to show proof of unity in this process of restructuring of the 357 parishes of the archdiocese.

Speaking of the “reconfigurations” of the parishes, he explained that these measure had to be taken because of demographic changes, the lack of priests, the decline in Sunday Mass attendance, financial difficulties and the failure to properly maintain numerous parishes. Consequently, “a substantial number of parishes” will have to be closed.
