United States: Petition by priests in support of obligatory celibacy

On September 27, ninety priests of the diocese of Arlington, Virginia sent a petition in favor of obligatory celibacy for priests to Bishop Wilton D. Gregory, President of the U.S. conference of bishops. By this action the priests meant to explicitly oppose the petition of their fellow priests in the diocese of Milwaukee, who, in August, had issued an appeal in favor of optional celibacy and access to the priesthood by married men.

The former group feels that relaxing the demands involved in becoming a priest would in no way encourage a growth in vocations: “In times of crisis, the wisdom and instinct of the Church has always been to respond with greater sacrifices”.
