On September 9, 2009, the Uruguayan  Senate gave final authorization to allow adoption by homosexual couples. The bill was approved thanks to the votes of the Frente Amplio (the Leftist coalition governing the country) and of the Colorado Party (Rightist opposition Party; however, another group from the opposition, the National Party (Center-right), voted against it. The reform has been condemned by the Catholic Church.
Uruguay had already stood apart from the neighboring countries by authorizing civil union between homosexuals last year. (DICI n° 202 -17/10/09 – Source: AFP)
