Vatican: A new commission to reform communications
While meeting with Pope Francis June 8-10, 2015, the Council of Cardinals (“C-9”) encouraged a plan to reform Vatican communications over the next four years. Eight entities will be concerned: the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, the Press Office of the Holy See, Vatican Radio, Vatican Television Center, L’Osservatore Romano and its photo department, Libreria editrice Vaticana, the Vatican printing house and its internet office.
According to Fr. Federico Lombardi, this plan foresees “the retention of personnel and the gradual integration of the different institutions”. During a press conference held on June 10 by the news agency I.Media, the director of the Press Office of the Holy See announced that a new dicastery would come into being on that occasion, so as to allow for the “centralized management of all Vatican communications”. The purpose is to allow for “serious savings” but also “better coordination and greater effectiveness of the Vatican’s different means of communication”.
