According to information from the German Catholic press agency KNA, Benedict XVI’s former butler, Paolo Gabriele, will now be working at the “Bambino Gesù,” a Roman hospital which is owned by the Vatican.  Last October, he had been sentenced to an 18-month prison term for aggravated theft of confidential documents (see DICI no. 262), before being pardoned by the pope shortly before Christmas.

Dismissed from Vatican City and the Papal Family, of which he was a member before being arrested, and having lost his Vatican citizenship after his conviction, the unfaithful butler will nevertheless still be employed by the Holy See and thus bound by papal confidentiality.
