On December 20, 2024, the Vatican inaugurated a photovoltaic glass roof at the Cortile delle Corazze in the Vatican Museums. The project has created a roof that provides thermal insulation. “This system makes an important contribution to the energy needs of the Vatican Museums,” explained Sofia Tiozzo Pezzoli, Technical Director of GruppoSTG.

After the Cortile delle Corazze, the Vignaccia warehouse in the Vatican Gardens will also be covered in photovoltaic glass. This work will be completed early next year. 20 fast charging stations on 10 columns and two ultra-fast charging points for electric vehicles were also inaugurated.

The Governorate of Vatican City is promoting ecological conversion by developing a sustainable mobility program for the vehicle fleet, in order to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. The cars owned by the Vatican State are gradually being replaced by electric vehicles, so that the vehicle fleet will be carbon neutral by 2030.

“Decarbonization,” said Cardinal Fernando Vérgez Alzaga, President of the Governorate, “is a challenge and renewable energies are an effective response to this problem. The way forward is therefore to reduce dependence on non-renewable sources,” specifying that these projects are “fully in line with the guidelines on the energy transition.”

This, in “harmony with what Pope Francis stated in the encyclical Laudato si’ and in the apostolic exhortation Laudate Deum.” He added: “the Governorate has committed itself to the path of energy transition and is today a pioneer in this area on the international scene.” – A post-conciliar Church so ecological that it will eventually become biodegradable.
