Will Assisted Suicide be the Norm in Spain within the Month?
The Spanish Socialists are determined to get their bill on euthanasia voted in by Congress by the end of June 2018. In order to do so, they also have to change the Code of Penal Law.
The Socialists’ spokeswoman in Congress, Adriana Lastra, called upon the “great social consensus” to defend this measure that she is “convinced” will soon be adopted by Parliament.
The bill proposes to include euthanasia in healthcare coverage. The patient will be able to request that his life be ended in cases of “serious and irreversible illnesses causing intolerable physical or mental suffering.”
The request is supposed to be reviewed by health professionals at several stages, and it is they who will make the final decision, within 32 days, to begin the fatal process.
For the time being, the bill allows doctors the right to conscientious objection in order to avoid performing euthanasia.
For this initiative to be implemented, article 143 of the Spanish Code of Penal Law that forbids euthanasia will have to be abrogated. The representatives of Catalonia have already filed this request for Congress’ next session.
Has the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party become a funeral party? One might believe so upon seeing the zeal being put into digging up Franco’s remains and burying the dying…
