Will Fr. Teilhard de Chardin be Rehabilitated by the Vatican?

On November 18, 2017, the Plenary Assembly of the Pontifical Assembly for Culture approved by a large majority a petition regarding the modernist philosopher.

This petition is to be sent to the Holy Father to withdraw the monitum issued by the Holy Office in 1962 regarding the writings of Fr. Teilhard de Chardin.

On June 30, 1962, a warning, or monitum, from the Holy Office invited bishops and religious superiors to warn faithful of the dangers presented by the ambiguities and philosophical and theological errors contained in the works of the Jesuit Teilhard de Chardin.

Rome was particularly concerned with Fr. Teilhard’s heterodox ideas on creation, the relation between the cosmos and God, and Christ.

A change of position:

The members of the Pontifical Council for Culture, in their petition, praise the Jesuit’s “prophetic vision” that “has been and is inspiring theologians and scientists”. Even all the sovereign pontiffs from Paul VI to Francis have made “explicit references” to his work, they say.

Will Francis, who pointed out himself in footnote 83 of his encyclical Laudato Si the importance of the Jesuit’s contribution on the question of the ultimate destiny of the universe, grant their request?

The future will tell.
