The president of the Republic of Haiti, Jovenel Moïse, returned to his country on January 28, 2018, after a visit to Italy during which he met with Pope Francis at the Vatican.
The Haitian head of State has given a report on his journey and announced that he invited the Holy Father to visit the island.
His meeting with the Pope, explained the head of State, was one of the most important events since he took office on February 7, 2017: “You have to know what it means to meet with the pope. He is not an ordinary person like all of us. Yet I discovered that Pope Francis knows all the miseries and sorrows in the world,” said the tenant of the National Palace.
Jovenel Moïse said he broached several subjects with the Holy Father, and officially invited him. “The last visit from to pope to Haiti was in March of 1983. I asked that Haiti might receive the great visit of Pope Francis,” he declared after recalling that Vatican City State was one of the first to recognize the independence of Haiti in 1824.
According to official statistics, Haiti had a population of 10.6 million in 2017, 55% of whom declare themselves Catholics.
