Cameroon: Thefts of hosts and sacred objects in Yaoundé
The local Catholic authorities in Yaoundé, Cameroon, are concerned about the theft of statues, hosts and other sacred items from parishes in the city. According to the Cameroonian daily Cameroon Tribune dated April 10, the parish priest of St. Therese of the Child Jesus Church raised the alarm. “One Sunday in the month of March,” he told the faithful that a hand from the statue of St. Francis of Assisi had been cut off and stolen. Two statues of Our Lady had already been stolen from the same church a few months earlier.
According to the bilingual daily of Yaoundé, two other parishes in the city have reported thefts of consecrated hosts since the beginning of the year. In one of them, the priest, speaking under condition of anonymity, revealed that “it was the altar server who had taken all the hosts.” When asked, the young man told the priest that “his parents had asked him for them. For what purpose? Only they know.”
