Germany: Seventeen churches disaffected in Berlin since 1995
At least 17 Catholic and Protestant places of worship in the city of Berlin have been disaffected since 1995. According to the French-speaking Swiss Catholic Church's website on December 16, 2015, they have been destroyed, sold or used "for other purposes". Of the twelve Catholic churches disaffected by the archdiocese of Berlin, two have been destroyed and the others have been transformed into schools or left to other Christian communities. According to the State secretary for the development of the city, "one of the reasons for these changes is the regrouping of parishes."
On the Protestant side, the five disaffected churches have been transformed into homes, a museum of childhood and youth, an exposition hall and a recording studio. The German capital nonetheless still counts about a hundred Catholic churches and over 300 Evangelical places of worship.
