The American Catholic information website Crux—threatened with shutdown after its financing was cut by daily The Boston Globe that launched it in 2014—will remain online with the support of Catholic organization the Knights of Columbus.

The leader of this charitable lay organization, which is based in the US and boasts over 1.8 million members worldwide, stated on March 15, 2016, that Crux was “a significant voice and source of information for Catholics” which it was of “primordial importance to maintain.” As for Crux, its management, Vaticanist John L. Allen and Roman correspondent Inés San Martín, stated that Crux would remain “an independent news source.”

According to John L. Allen, the project will turn Crux into “an even higher-performing” website, in spite of the deletion of some postings. The plan to restructure includes the integration of Catholic Pulse, a website offering information and commentary run by the Knights of Columbus.

Crux was launched in September 2014 with the mission of covering “all Catholic current affairs,” targeting Catholics who are “not necessarily practicing,” and “readers interested by Pope Francis, religion and spirituality.” The Boston Globe has authorized Crux to retain its name and logo.
