Mexico: The Bishops oppose “Homosexual Marriage”
Enrique Peña Nieto.
Although already legal in certain of the country’s States, same-sex marriage could be generalized in Mexico soon. Such, in any case, is the desire of the Mexican president Enrique Peña Nieto, who, according to Le Monde on May 18, 2016, announced during an “international day against homophobia” that he wished to modify the Constitution in order to establish “a right” for people to marry “without discrimination”.
The president also declared that he wishes to revise the wording of the federal code in order to suppress “the discriminating expressions”.
According to Radio Vatican’s website on May 19, 2016, the Mexican bishops are opposed to these initiatives and have published a statement against any constitutional modification. They recall that “unions between persons of the same sex” cannot “be compared to marriage. No precarious union or union closed to the transmission of life can ensure for us the future of society,” they wrote. Despite the precedents in effect in Mexico since 2009, the bishops reaffirmed that there exists “no foundation for assimilating or establishing even loose analogies between homosexual unions and the plan of God for marriage and the family.”
So far, three States and the city of Mexico have legalized these unions. In June 2015, the Supreme Court of Mexico handed down the judgment that any decision forbidding marriage between persons of the same sex is unconstitutional.
On 15 February 2016, during his trip to Mexico, Pope Francis had these words: “We see how the family is weakened and questioned” by those who claim to be modern, by means of ideologies “that have a destructive effect on families, the family cell, which is the basis of every healthy society.” (see DICI DICI no. 331 dated February 26, 2016)
