Switzerland: Ordinations to the Priesthood and Diaconate 2024

On Thursday, June 27, Bishop Bernard Fellay ordained seminarians of the International Seminary of Saint Pius X in Écône to the Orders of the priesthood and diaconate, before a great crowd of clergy and numerous faithful.

During his homily, the pontiff recalled that, according to the words of St. Paul, the priest is chosen “to defend the interests of God,” chosen by God Himself. This priestly action, absorbed in that of Christ, the Sovereign Priest, takes place in a combat.

As for the deacons, they will be entrusted with the preaching of the Gospel, which is also a battle. This fight will last until the end of the world. This fight is a fight for faith, for “without faith it is impossible to please God” (Heb. 11:6).

The deacon and especially the priest must cooperate with God for the sanctification of souls. Certainly, it is God who infuses grace into souls, but He desires the cooperation of man, the cooperation of the priesthood.

But this treasure of priestly grace is deposited in “a fragile vessel,” because grace does not destroy nature, which retains its weaknesses. When God gives a mission, He gives the grace to fulfill it. But for this the priest must be a “man of God”—in other words, a “man of prayer.” This is the secret of every apostolate.

On this day when the Church celebrates Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Bishop Fellay conferred the diaconate on three French seminarians. He then conferred the priesthood on seven seminarians, all French, to whom were added three Capuchin friars from the Convent of Morgon.
